The institute now serves the important function of allowing scholars to create synthesis between traditional texts and modern-day challenges. Our advanced postgraduate courses for ‘alimiyya graduates and students are taught with the purpose of contextualizing and solidifying their knowledge. The Fatwa Centre, or what is traditionally known as the Dār al-Iftā’, is a pivotal department of the Whitethread Institute. The website is headed by Hanif Yusuf. He completed the memorisation of the Holy Qur‘an and the ‘Alimiyyah programme at a Darul-Uloom (an Islamic seminary) in U.K. He thereafter travelled to Darul Iftaa Mahmudiyyah, Durban, South Africa, to train as a Mufti under the tutelage of Mufti Ebrahim Desai and Mufti Husain Kadodia (may Allah preserve them both. Ameen).
Darul Iftaa (Institute of Islamic Jurisprudence) aims to provide insight into the Islamic perspective on personal, social, and global issues. We hope to enrich understanding, debate, and discussion by providing an Islamic dimension to queries and specific concerns.

Question: Please explain as to who are Wifaqul Ulama and the Scholars who support it? Can I get the name of some of the major British Scholars who support your stance on Moon Sighting? Why are Wifaqul Ulama only concerned with Moon? Doesn’t the Ummah have bigger problems?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh
We would like to begin by extending our gratitude to you for asking this question. May Allah (SWT) give you the best of rewards (Ameen).
“All praise be to Allah who is the one who formed the Shari’ah, who favoured us initially with Guidance and gave us protection frrom ignorance, purely through his compassion. Peace and salatutations be upon Nabi ﷺ who is our protector from falsehood. Peace be upon the family of Nabi ﷺ, his companions, the Ta’bieen and those Fuqaha’ who devoted their efforts to deriving Shari’ rulings so that this Fiqh can protect us from the common nature of sins and ignorance; guiding us to the truth. Nonetheless, our honourable Mufti Mubasshir Ibn Mawlana Talha Ibn Hafiz Sana’ullah Ibn Mawlana Ismail Manubari (who is a resident of England) came into contact with this humble servant in the year 1441Hijri and to date, he has continued to write Fatawa. The Fatawa of the described are in accordance to the Hanafi School of Thought, which I (this lowly servant) read and advise/approve. Thereafter, the described (Mufti Mubasshir) uploads it onto his website.
Since the aforementioned (Mufti Mubasshir) is in England, he has completed the formal Ifta’ syllabus under expert Muftis and Ulama’. Nonetheless, this humble servant has continued to oversee his Fatawa-writing, approving his Fatwas.
Now, this humble servant is giving the aforementioned (Mufti Mubasshir) the Ijazah for Ifta’ from my own side. Thus, this humble servant advises the recipent of this Ijazah (Mufti Mubasshir) that he adopts Taqwa and piety at every juncture of his life. Moreover, since a Mufti signs [each Fatwa] on behalf of Allah, he should uphold Islamic mannerisms and character; after following the Haqq (truth), he should not be dissuaded by the criticism of the criticisers. The described should also stay firm on the Aqeedah of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah, firm on the Hanafi Madhab avoiding unnecessary mixing between the different schools of thought. Finally, this humble servant advises that he remembers me in his Du’as, both in public and in private. May Allah grant him the ability to act upon this (advice).

The purpose of the Institute for the Revival of Traditional Islamic Sciences (معهد إحياء العلوم الإسلامية التقليدية (IRTIS)) can be found in the following ḥadīth,
يحمِلُ هذا العِلمَ من كلِّ خلَفٍ عدولُه ينفونَ عنهُ تحريفَ الجاهِلينَ وانتحالَ المبطلينَ وتأويلَ الغالينَ
Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbdurraḥmān al-ʿUḍrī said that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “The just, possessors of Truth from every generation will preserve and safeguard this Knowledge from the distortions of the innovators, the assumptions of the prattlers and the misinterpretation of the ignorant.” (Transmitted by al-Bayhaqī)
This is by no means a claim by the Institute that we are worthy of the honourable rank as described by the Prophet ﷺ. But rather this ḥadīth is understood as an instruction in that individuals from the Umma should be striving to partake in this work. That is the intention of the Institute and we pray that Allah the Almighty raises us amongst those described as the just and the possessors of Truth safeguarding His Dīn – Āmīn.
